New domain name will host only contact information

Monday 2nd February, 2009: Hostway is today warning companies that following the closure of the sunrise period for the new .Tel domain name, they only have six weeks to register during the landrush period before the general registration period opens on the 24th March. During the landrush period, domain names are available to all but at a premium price, discouraging cyber squatters or casual registrants. The domain name is a substantial departure from all other domain names, and .tel web pages will only list contact information for companies in a clear, plain format, rather than hosting standard websites.

.Tel is a fundamental departure from standard domain names, said Thomas Herbert, product manager, Hostway. It is aimed at being the new address book for the internet. For example, if you look up smallco.tel, you ll see a list of contact details and nothing else. There aren t any standard websites under the .tel domain name, so accessing contact information will be fast and simple, even from a mobile device. If companies have not already registered for the .Tel address, they should certainly think very carefully about it.

Registrants for the domain name can simply provide their contact details to their hosting provider and Telnic, the body administrating the domain name, and all the website details will be taken care of. For example, the live .tel web page www.smallco.tel lists a contact phone number, email, fax, web page, physical address and keywords, all in a clear, easy-to-see format, which is also readily accessible from a mobile phone. Certain contact details can be protected by the use of a friends list, whereby certain data is only available to friends who log in with a specific username and password. All details are hosted directly on the domain name server DNS so no website design is necessary. When queried, the DNS replies with the contact details held on it. This makes the system much faster because queries for .tel quiz the DNS directly for information, rather than using the DNS to convert a web address into an IP address and then retrieving the website.

The .Tel domain name could be very useful indeed, continued Herbert. Rather than fishing around for about us pages, you could simply logon to the .tel address and find it in seconds from a desktop, laptop or mobile device. When you add in the potential of click to talk, this domain name has the potential to make finding and contacting organisations a lot easier.
